About Me and My Counselling Methods

My name is Anthea Adams and I am an experienced, professionally qualified counsellor/psychotherapist. Both terms in my view can be interchangeable; counselling can often be a shorter-term work and more focused on working with immediate problems. In general psychotherapy is more likely to undertake longer-term work and be more exploratory and address more issues. For me the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is of paramount importance and can provide a rich learning experience and is the crucial element to a positive outcome, a greater sense of well-being.

I am a registered nurse and have been working in the field for over 20 years. Nursing interventions are concerned with empowering people and helping them to achieve independence, this links in with my work as a psychotherapist, which also looks at healing, growth and development whilst working in partnership.

I have also worked overseas, and gained practical experience and cultural insights from working with people from many different ethnic family backgrounds.

My approach is Integrative. My work is informed by Psychodynamic, Person- Centred, Gestalt,Attachment Theory and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I am able to draw on the common ground across therapies. This offers a way of working tailored to your individual needs. For me as a counsellor it is important to provide a safe, respectful and non-judgemental approach for exploring your issues. My role is to facilitate your work in ways that respect your values, personal resources and capacity for choice within your cultural context.
